Feast Day: September 18
Saint Dula The Slave, also known as Saint Dula of Nicomedia, was a Christian slave in Nicomedia, Asia Minor, during the early years of the Church. Living in a time when Christianity was still persecuted, Dula's life exemplified unyielding faith and courage in the face of oppression. Not much is known about Dula's early life or her family background. Born into servitude, she was owned by a pagan soldier in Nicomedia. Despite her circumstances, Dula maintained a steadfast commitment to her Christian beliefs. Her devotion to her faith was tested when her owner attempted to rape her. In an act of unwavering bravery, Dula fought off the assault and chose to protect her virtue and maintain her loyalty to God. It was during this struggle that she lost her life, martyred for defending her beliefs and her own dignity. Dula's steadfastness in the face of such adversity served as a profound testament to her deep faith and unwavering commitment to her Christian values. Following her death, Dula was venerated as a powerful example of fidelity to God and resistance against evil. She came to be represented in art as a young woman being watched over by a dog, symbolizing her purity and loyalty. This iconic representation of Dula’s story has continued to be used as a visual reminder of her sacrifice and her status as a holy intercessor. Though not much is known about her life beyond the details of her martyrdom, her story has been passed down through the generations and her memory cherished among the faithful. Despite the limited knowledge of her life, her reputation as a virtuous and valiant Christian has endured. Saint Dula The Slave does not have any recorded patronage, and her feast day is celebrated on March 25th. While recognized as a saint within the Catholic tradition, her canonization occurred before the formal establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, and thus she is considered to be pre-Congregation. Her life serves as an inspiration to believers, reminding them of the importance of standing firm in their faith and defending their values, even in the face of great adversity. Saint Dula's unwavering commitment to God, even unto death, continues to inspire and resonate with the faithful to this day.
