Biography

Saint Atilano Cruzalvarado was a revered Catholic priest who ministered in the Archdiocese of Guadalajara, Mexico during a time when the act of ordination was considered a crime in the country. Born on October 5, 1901, in Ahuetita de Abajo, Teocaltiche, Jalisco, Mexico, his life was marked by a courageous devotion to his faith and a deep love for his people.

In an era when Catholicism was suppressed in Mexico, Saint Atilano served as a shining example of unwavering dedication and selflessness. Despite the risks involved, he clandestinely ministered to covert Catholics, providing them with the sacraments in secret and offering solace and guidance in their time of need. His unwavering faith and commitment to his vocation propelled him forward, even as he had to constantly hide from the authorities who sought to suppress Catholic worship.

Tragically, Saint Atilano's life was cut short during the Mexican Revolution. On July 1, 1928, in Las Cruces, Cuqu√≠o, Jalisco, he was martyred for his unwavering commitment to his faith. Shot at dawn, he became a true witness to the Gospel values of sacrifice and martyrdom.

Recognizing his heroic actions and his ultimate sacrifice, Saint Atilano Cruzalvarado was venerated by Pope John Paul II on March 7, 1992, through the decree of martyrdom. His cause was further acknowledged on November 22, 1992 when he was beatified by Pope John Paul II. Finally, on May 21, 2000, he was canonized as a saint by the same pope, joining the ranks of the heavenly intercessors and standing as a source of inspiration for Catholics worldwide.
