Biography

Saint Attilanus of Zamora, also known as Atilanus or Attilano, was a Benedictine monk and a prominent figure in the early medieval Church in Spain. He was born around 939 in Tarazona, Spain. Attilanus's deep faith and desire for a life of devotion led him to join the Benedictine Order. Attilanus became a close friend and spiritual student of Saint Froilan, another revered saint of the time. The two of them shared a deep bond and together founded the monastery of Moreruela in Spain. Their shared vision was to create a place dedicated to prayer and meditation, promoting the ideals of the Benedictine way of life. As Attilanus continued on his spiritual journey, he was appointed as the prior of Moreruela. His wisdom and leadership skills greatly contributed to the growth and success of the monastery. Throughout his time as prior, he demonstrated an exceptional dedication to his monastic duties and the spiritual formation of the monks under his care. In 990, on Whit-Sunday, Attilanus was consecrated as the Bishop of Zamora, a significant responsibility considering the region had been under Moorish occupation. As bishop, Attilanus played a crucial role in the reestablishment of the Church in this area. He worked tirelessly to restore faith, rebuild churches, and promote the Catholic teachings. Saint Attilanus was known for his humility, piety, and tireless efforts to evangelize and enforce the Christian faith in the Zamora diocese. He became a source of inspiration and guidance for the people, particularly as he worked towards the reconciliation of different communities that had previously experienced division due to religious differences. As a leader, Attilanus was deeply committed to justice and compassion. He advocated for the poor, caring for their needs and working towards social upliftment. His strong sense of solidarity and empathy endeared him to his flock and earned him a reputation for being a true shepherd of his people. Saint Attilanus of Zamora passed away in the year 1009 in Zamora, Castilla y León, Spain, succumbing to natural causes. His relics were venerated and are still preserved in Saint Peter's Church in Zamora. In recognition of his remarkable holiness and contributions, he was canonized as a saint by Pope Urban II in 1095. Saint Attilanus is revered as the patron saint of Zamora, Spain, and the diocese of Zamora. His feast days are celebrated on October 5th and 6th in the Benedictine calendar. Some calendars also commemorate him on October 3rd, while Tarragona, Spain honors him on August 28th. Throughout his life, Saint Attilanus of Zamora showed unwavering devotion to his faith and a profound commitment to serving God and his people. His legacy continues to inspire and guide Catholics worldwide, reminding us of the transformative power of faith, love, and selfless service.
