Saint Bartholomea Capitanio

Saint Bartholomea Capitanio, born on January 13, 1807, in Lovere, Bergamo, Italy, was the daughter of an alcoholic corn-factor. Despite the opposition of her family to her desire to become a nun, Bartholomea took a private vow of perpetual chastity. She dedicated her life to teaching and working with youth as a laywoman.

Bartholomea was known for her extensive correspondence, often writing on spirituality. Many of her letters were later collected and published, showcasing her deep devotion and wisdom. Despite not being able to enter religious life, she continued to live a life of holiness and service, touching the lives of those around her.

In 1832, together with Saint Vincentia Gerosa, Bartholomea founded the Sisters of Charity of Lovere. The congregation was based on the Rule of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul and was dedicated to teaching the young and caring for the impoverished sick. The Sisters of Charity of Lovere received papal approval in 1840, and their community grew rapidly. Today, it has over 500 communities spread throughout the world, continuing Bartholomea's mission of love and compassion.

Saint Bartholomea Capitanio lived a short but impactful life, devoting herself to God and serving those in need. She passed away on July 26, 1833, in Lovere, Bergamo, Italy, at the young age of 26 due to tuberculosis. Her steadfast faith and unwavering dedication to her vocation have inspired countless individuals throughout the years.

Recognizing her heroic virtues, Pope Leo XIII declared Bartholomea Capitanio venerable on January 6, 1902. She was beatified on May 30, 1926, by Pope Pius XI and later canonized as a saint on May 18, 1950, by Pope Pius XII. Her feast day is celebrated on July 26, and she is also honored on May 18 in various places associated with her life and the Sisters of Charity of Lovere.

Saint Bartholomea Capitanio is particularly revered in her hometown of Lovere, Italy, where she is recognized as the patron saint.
