Saint Bartholomew of Farne (born Tostig, later William) was a 12th-century English hermit whose life reflected profound spiritual transformation. Born to Scandinavian immigrants in England, he endured childhood teasing that prompted him to abandon his birth name, Tostig, for William. As a youth, he led a dissolute life before embarking on a wandering journey across Europe, possibly to evade an arranged marriage. During this period, he experienced a decisive conversion.
