Feast Day: December 17
Saint Begga of Andenne, also known as Saint Begga of Landen, was born into the nobility around the year 615. She was the daughter of Saint Pepin of Landen, who served as the mayor of the palace at the Merovingian court, and Saint Ida of Nivelles. Begga grew up in a devout Christian family and had a sister named Gertrude, who later became a saint as well. In her youth, Begga was married to Ansegilius, the son of Saint Arnulf of Metz. Together, they had two sons: Pepin of Herstal, who would go on to become the founder of the Carolingian dynasty of rulers in France, and Martin of Laon. Tragedy struck when Ansegilius died in a hunting accident in 691. After her husband's untimely death, Begga made the decision to dedicate her life to God. She took the veil and became a nun, seeking solace and spiritual guidance in the religious life. Her deep faith and piety inspired her to actively contribute to the growth of the Church. As a devoted follower of Christ, Begga founded seven churches and established a convent at Andenne, located on the banks of the Meuse River in France. She became the abbess of this convent, which served as a center for prayer, spiritual instruction, and charitable works. Begga dedicated herself to the well-being and spiritual formation of the nuns under her care, imparting her wisdom and guiding them on their journey of faith. Saint Begga lived out the remainder of her days as a faithful abbess, committed to the spiritual welfare of her community. She was known for her exemplary virtue, humility, and love for God and her neighbor. Her devotion to prayer and her acts of charity made a lasting impact on the people around her, leaving a legacy of holiness and service. Saint Begga of Andenne passed away in the year 693 at the convent in Andenne, the place she called home for many years. Her unwavering faith and dedication to a life of piety earned her recognition as a saint, although her canonization took place before the official establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. Today, Saint Begga is commemorated on December 17th, the day of her feast. Although she currently does not have a specific patronage assigned to her, she is venerated as a holy saint who, through her life of prayer and works of charity, continues to inspire believers to deepen their relationship with God and strive for sanctity.
