Biography

Saint Bona of Pisa, also known as Blessed Bona, was a mystic and visionary who lived in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. Born around 1156 in Pisa, Italy, Bona exhibited a deep spirituality from a young age. She became an Augustinian tertiary by the tender age of 10, demonstrating her commitment to a life of faith and service. At the age of 14, Bona embarked on a pilgrimage to the Holy Lands to visit her father, who was fighting in the Crusades. However, her journey took a dramatic turn when she was captured by Islamic pirates in the Mediterranean Sea. Imprisoned and facing an uncertain future, Bona's unwavering faith and prayers for deliverance were answered when fellow Pisan Christians came to her rescue and secured her freedom. Following this harrowing experience, Bona continued her life as a pilgrim. She embarked on multiple journeys to Rome, Italy, where she sought spiritual guidance and nourishment. Bona also became a frequent pilgrim to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, making the arduous journey a remarkable nine times. She even took on the responsibility of leading groups of pilgrims during these trips, showcasing her leadership qualities and devotion to assisting others in their spiritual quests. Bona's unwavering commitment to pilgrimage and her service to others during these journeys led to her eventual recognition as a patron saint in several areas. She became known as the patroness of air hosts, air hostesses, air stewards, couriers, flight attendants, guides, pilgrims, Pisa (her hometown), stewardesses, and travelers. Her influence reached such heights that Pope John XXIII officially bestowed this patronage upon her in 1962, recognizing her unique ability to protect those who travel through the skies. Saint Bona of Pisa passed away around 1207 in her hometown. She died of natural causes and was buried at the church of San Martino in Pisa, where her memory and legacy have been honored for centuries. Her feast day is celebrated on May 29th each year, allowing faithful Catholics to commemorate her life and seek her intercession.
