Feast Day: July 18
Saint Bruno of Segni, also known as Bruno of Solero, was born in 1049 in Solero, Piedmont, Italy. He was born into a noble family and dedicated his life to the service of God and the Catholic Church. Bruno's deep passion for theology led him to pursue his studies at the Benedictine monastery of Saint Pepetuus in Asti, Italy, and later at Bologna. After completing his theological education, Bruno embraced the Benedictine way of life and became a monk. In 1079, he was ordained to the priesthood and was assigned to a parish in Siena, Italy. It was during this time that he began to gain recognition for his defense of orthodox Church teachings and his profound understanding of Scripture. Additionally, Bruno's teachings on the Blessed Sacrament greatly influenced those around him. Due to his exceptional knowledge and wisdom, Bruno was sought after as a counselor by four popes. In 1080, Pope Gregory VII consecrated Bruno as the bishop of Segni, Italy, which was a position he held until his retirement. In his role as bishop, Bruno fearlessly fought against the abuses of simony and lay investiture, both of which were widespread issues of the time. In 1095, Bruno decided to retire from his episcopal duties and dedicate himself solely to a monastic life. He sought refuge in the renowned Monte Cassino monastery, where he was highly revered for his piety and devotion. In 1107, Bruno was elected as the abbot of the monastery, a position he humbly accepted. However, his tenure as abbot was not without challenges. Bruno's strong sense of justice led him to chastise the pope for shirking his responsibilities towards others. As a result, he was soon ordered to return to his diocese in Segni, where he faithfully served until his death. Apart from his various roles within the Church, Bruno also served as the Vatican librarian and held the prestigious position of cardinal legate, although he declined the cardinalate. Throughout his life, Bruno wrote numerous theological works, showcasing his profound understanding of the faith and making significant contributions to Catholic scholarship. Saint Bruno of Segni passed away in 1123 of natural causes. In recognition of his exemplary life and holiness, Pope Lucius III canonized him as a saint on 5th September 1183. Saint Bruno is honored and venerated as the patron saint of Segni, Italy, the place where he served as bishop and dedicated himself to the spiritual welfare of the people. His feast day is celebrated on 18th July each year as a reminder of his enduring legacy.
