Biography

Saint Buonfiglio Monaldi, also known as Bonfilio Monaldo, Bonfiglio Monaldi, Buonfiglio da Firenze, and Buonfiglio of Florence, was born in Florence, Italy, in the 13th century. He is widely recognized as one of the Seven Founders of the Servants of Mary, a religious order devoted to the service of God and the Blessed Virgin Mary. As the eldest of the Founders, Buonfiglio Monaldi played a pivotal role in the establishment and early formation of the Servite Order. Born into a wealthy and influential family, he was known for his deep faith and commitment to serving God. Alongside the other six founders, he embraced a life of poverty, humility, and devotion. Buonfiglio Monaldi became the first superior of the Servites, leading the fledgling order with great wisdom and devotion. Then, on January 15, 1888, Pope Leo XIII canonized him, officially declaring him a saint of the Catholic Church. Although specific patronages are not widely attributed to Saint Buonfiglio Monaldi, his legacy as one of the Seven Founders of the Servites ensures that he is venerated and invoked by the Servite Order and those devoted to the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary.
