Biography

Saint Burgundofara, also known as Burgondophora, Fare, and Fara, was born in 595 in Burgundy, France. She was the daughter of Count Agneric, a courtier of King Theodebert II. From a young age, Burgundofara felt a strong calling to religious life, despite her father's fierce opposition. Her father insisted on arranging a marriage for her, but Burgundofara fell critically ill before the wedding could take place. Miraculously, she was healed by the intercession of Saint Eustace. This miraculous event softened her father's heart, and he eventually consented to her desire to become a nun. In light of Burgundofara's persistence and her miraculous recovery, her father, Count Agneric, built a convent for her. The convent followed the Rule of Saint Columban, a strict set of monastic regulations. Over time, the convent became known as the Benedictine abbey of Faremoutiers, which is still in existence today. Burgundofara assumed the role of abbess at Faremoutiers and served in this capacity for an impressive 37 years. She was widely admired for her piety and administrative skill. Under her leadership, the abbey thrived and became a center of learning and spirituality. One of Burgundofara's notable contributions was her training of numerous English nun-saints, including Saint Ethelburga. Her dedication to educating and nurturing these women led to her renown spreading beyond the borders of France. In fact, the great historian Bede mentions her in his works, which led to the mistaken belief that she died in England. Saint Burgundofara is commonly represented in religious art as an abbess with an ear of corn, symbolizing her connection to agricultural abundance and the people she served. Another common depiction shows her blessing a child, in reference to the blessing she received as a baby from Saint Columbanus. Saint Burgundofara passed away near Meaux, France, in either 643, 655, or 657, with conflicting records regarding the exact year of her death. Nevertheless, her legacy and impact on the spiritual community endured. She was canonized as a saint, though the exact details of her canonization are not recorded due to being pre-congregation. Today, Saint Burgundofara is honored as the patron saint of Faremoutiers, France. Her feast day is celebrated on December 7, and some calendars also recognize April 3 as a day to commemorate her life and virtues. Throughout history, Saint Burgundofara has been revered for her unwavering devotion to her faith, her inspiring leadership, and her commitment to fostering spiritual growth in others.
