Biography

Saint Caprasius of Agen, also known as Caprasio, was a courageous martyr who lived during the time of the persecutions of Diocletian in the early fourth century. Although not much is known about his early life, it is believed that he was born in Agen, France. During the severe persecutions of Christians under the reign of Diocletian, many believers attempted to hide or flee to avoid the wrath of the authorities. It was during this time that Saint Caprasius sought refuge in the hills near his home, hoping to escape the persecution and continue practicing his faith in secret. However, the story of Saint Caprasius takes an unexpected turn when he encountered Saint Faith, a young girl who openly proclaimed her Christian beliefs despite the dangers she faced. Inspired by her unwavering courage, Caprasius was moved to openly proclaim his own Christianity as well, abandoning his plans of hiding and remaining faithful to his beliefs. Unfortunately, this decision came at a great cost. Saint Caprasius was soon apprehended and brought before the authorities, who were determined to stamp out the Christian faith and all those who professed it. Despite threats and torture, Caprasius refused to renounce his belief in Christ, remaining steadfast in his faith until the end. In 303 AD, Saint Caprasius of Agen was sentenced to death by beheading, thus becoming a martyr for his unwavering devotion to Christ. His martyrdom serves as a testament to his courage and dedication, even in the face of persecution and imminent death. Saint Caprasius has not been officially recognized as a patron saint for any specific cause or group, and his representations in art or iconography are not widely known. However, his example of unwavering faith and courage continues to inspire Christians today. Though Saint Caprasius' canonization process predates the establishment of the formal canonization procedures of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, he is considered a saint by tradition and veneration. His feast day is celebrated on October 20th, where believers honor his memory and draw inspiration from his heroic witness. The life of Saint Caprasius of Agen reminds us of the persecution faced by early Christians and the courage they displayed in defending their faith. His story serves as an example of unwavering devotion and a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who came before us. Today, Saint Caprasius stands as an inspiration for all Christians, encouraging us to live our faith boldly and fearlessly, even in the face of adversity.
