Biography

Saint Conrad of Parzham, also known by various names such as Conrad Birndorfer, Hansel Birndorfer, Johann Birndorfer, Johannes Birndorfer, John Birndorfer, Corrado Giovanni Evangelista Birndorfer da Parzham, and Konrad, was born on December 22, 1818, in Parzham, Bavaria, Germany. He was the youngest of nine children born into a farming family in a region that was recovering from the aftermath of the Napoleonic wars. At the age of 14, tragedy struck when Conrad's mother passed away. This loss deeply affected him and propelled him towards a life devoted to solitary prayer and peacemaking. Even at a young age, Conrad displayed a strong spiritual inclination and was a familiar sight at all the churches and shrines in his region. He would often wait at the door at sunrise to be the first to attend Mass. Conrad's devotion led him to become a Capuchin tertiary at the age of 31. Two years later, he became a Capuchin novice, taking the name Conrad. He was then assigned to the shrine of Our Lady of Altotting. For over 40 years, Conrad served as a porter, greeting and admitting people to the friary. He was also responsible for obtaining supplies, dispensing alms, and encouraging all who came to the friary on pilgrimages to open themselves to God. Moreover, Conrad dedicated himself to working with local children, teaching them the faith and religious practices. He also supported various charities for children. His sincerity and dedication made him a beloved figure in the community. Conrad was noted for his gifts of prophecy and the ability to read people's hearts, which further enhanced his reputation as a holy and wise man. As Conrad neared the end of his life, three days before his death, he realized that he could no longer fulfill his duties as a porter. He humbly relinquished his position, celebrated Mass, and then took to his sick bed for the last time. Outside his window, local children whom he had taught the rosary recited it until his passing. Saint Conrad of Parzham died on April 21, 1894, in Altotting, Bavaria, Germany, from natural causes. His life of exceptional holiness and devotion to God gained recognition, and on August 15, 1928, Pope Pius XI declared him venerable for his heroic virtues. He was subsequently beatified by Pope Pius XI on June 30, 1930, and canonized on May 20, 1934. Saint Conrad of Parzham is venerated as a patron saint of the Capuchin-Franciscan Province of Mid-America, the Catholic Student Association, doorkeepers, and the Diocese of Passau, Germany (since 1984). His life serves as an inspiration for all those striving for holiness and assisting others in their spiritual journey.
