Feast Day: November 8
Saint Cybi of Caernarvon, also known as Cuby, Gybi, Kebius, or Kybi, was a prominent figure in the Catholic Church during the 6th century. While there are some uncertainties surrounding his genealogy, it is believed that he may have been the son of Saint Selevan and possibly the cousin of Saint David of Wales. Despite the lack of concrete evidence, it is widely accepted that Cybi was born in the 6th century in Cornwall. As a devout Christian, Cybi dedicated his life to spreading the teachings of Jesus and serving as a beacon of faith for others. He embarked on a spiritual journey as an itinerant hermit, wanderer, evangelist, monk, and eventually became an esteemed abbot. His dedication and commitment to his faith were unparalleled, and he had a profound impact on the communities he encountered. One of Cybi's most significant accomplishments was the foundation of the renowned monastery of Caer Gybi, also known as Cybi's Fort, in Holyhead, Anglesey, Wales. The monastery was established within the walls of an ancient Roman fort and served as a spiritual hub for the local population. Cybi's leadership and devotion to the faith attracted numerous followers, and under his guidance, the monastery thrived and became a center of learning and spiritual enlightenment. Recognizing Cybi's exceptional qualities, he was ordained as a missionary bishop, entrusted with spreading Christianity to the surrounding areas. His missionary activities were not confined to a specific location, and he traveled extensively, bringing the message of Christ to many communities. It is said that Cybi was a close friend of Saint Seiriol, another prominent figure in the early church. Throughout the centuries, various exaggerated stories have emerged about Cybi, likely due to his notable reputation and the reverence he commanded from those who knew him. These tales often involve miraculous events attributed to his intercession and divine favor. Although these stories should be taken with caution, they testify to the profound impact Cybi had on the communities he encountered. Saint Cybi of Caernarvon is venerated to this day, particularly at his monastery in Holyhead. He is celebrated on the 8th of November and also has a feast day on the 13th of August in Cornwall. Due to his connection to Cornwall, he is recognized as the patron of Cuby and Landulph in Cornwall, as well as Llangibby in Monmouthshire and Llangybi in Cardigan, both in Wales. The people of Tregony, Cornwall, also hold him in high regard. While Saint Cybi of Caernarvon's life may be shrouded in some uncertainties and legends, his unwavering commitment to his faith and his tireless efforts to spread the message of Christ make him an inspiring figure in the history of the Catholic Church.
