Biography

Saint David Galvánbermúdez, also known as David, was born on 29 January 1881 in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. From a young age, David felt a strong calling to the priesthood and entered the seminary in Guadalajara at the tender age of 14. He displayed great academic aptitude and was recognized as an excellent student. However, as David questioned his vocation, he made the difficult decision to leave the seminary for three years. During this time, he pursued a worldly lifestyle, working, dating, and wasting his time. Unfortunately, his actions led him astray, and he even found himself in trouble with the law after he hit his girlfriend while under the influence of alcohol. Despite his detour from his faith, David eventually realized that he could not ignore the call to his vocation. After a year of probation, he was granted permission to return to the seminary. His sense of remorse and determination to seek redemption guided him during this period of his life. David was ordained as a priest on 20 May 1909. His commitment to his vocation was evident as he became a seminary instructor at Amatitán and later served as a supervisor at the Amatitán seminary. His teaching and guidance undoubtedly impacted the lives of many seminarians. Notably, David was arrested at least once, facing charges related to his priesthood during a time of social and political unrest. Despite the dangers surrounding him, he fearlessly ventured into the field of battle to provide aid to the injured, skillfully patching wounds and offering the sacrament of confession. Tragically, while on his way to Guadalajara to assist the victims of armed street fighting, David was arrested alongside Father Jose Araíza. Father Araíza was eventually ransomed out of prison, but David remained captive. His faith and dedication to serving God led to his martyrdom. Saint David Galvánbermúdez was executed by firing squad on 30 January 1915 in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. He was murdered simply for being a priest, and it was suspected that he might be aiding the rebels in the country. Even in the midst of his own suffering, David selflessly comforted his fellow prisoners and continued to hear their confessions in the hours leading up to his execution. Saint David Galvánbermúdez was venerated on 7 March 1992 by Pope John Paul II, who recognized his martyrdom. He was later beatified on 22 November 1992 by Pope John Paul II, and finally, canonized on 21 May 2000 during the Jubilee of Mexico, also by Pope John Paul II. Although Saint David does not have a specific patronage assigned to him, his life serves as an inspiration to all who are seeking redemption and strive to answer their own vocational callings. He teaches us the importance of humility, repentance, and unwavering dedication to one's faith, even in the face of adversity.
