Biography

Saint Elias The Younger, also known as Elias of Enna, Elias of Salinas, Elia, Elijah, and Giovanni Rachites, was born around the year 823 in Enna, Sicily, Italy, as Giovanni Rachites. He lived during a time of turmoil when Muslim Saracens invaded his homeland, leading to widespread persecutions. To escape the persecutions, Elias fled to Jerusalem, where he sought refuge. There, he received the monastic habit from the Patriarch of Jerusalem and took the name Elias. He embarked on a spiritual journey, dedicating himself to the monastic life in the tradition of the Eastern Fathers. Elias spent three years in a monastery in Sinai, immersing himself in prayer and contemplation. Seeking further spiritual growth, he embarked on an extensive pilgrimage, traveling to Alexandria in Egypt, then to Persia and Antioch, before returning to Palestine. In 878, Elias decided to settle in the region of Calabria in Sicily. There, he embraced a life of asceticism and devoted himself to prayer. His austere existence became an inspiration to many, as he lived a life of simplicity and renunciation of worldly desires. Recognized for his deep spirituality and wisdom, Elias founded a monastery in the nearby Salinas area in 884. The monastery served as a center of spiritual guidance and grew in reputation due to Elias' teachings. People sought his counsel, and he became well-known as a spiritual teacher, helping others in their journey towards God. During his lifetime, Elias embarked on a pilgrimage to Rome, Italy, deepening his connection to the seat of the Catholic Church. He continued his spiritual pursuits and was on a pilgrimage to Constantinople when he passed away in 903 in Thessalonica, Macedonia. He died of natural causes, bringing an end to his incredible journey as a monk. Elias was laid to rest in the Salinas monastery he had founded in Calabria, Italy. Unfortunately, the monastery was destroyed by an earthquake in the 18th century, but the memory of Elias and his impact on the lives of many faithful continues to endure. While not specifically associated with particular representations or patronages, the life of Saint Elias The Younger reflects his profound commitment to the monastic life and his dedication to prayer and contemplation. Though he lived during a time of great challenges and upheaval, Elias remained steadfast in his pursuit of holiness. Saint Elias The Younger was canonized, but it occurred before the formal establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, making him a Pre-Congregation saint. His feast day is celebrated on August 17th, a day for honoring his life and remembering his dedication to the spiritual path.
