Death: October 15, 886
Saint Euthymius the Younger, also known as Euthymius the Thessalonian or Euthymius the New, was a revered Catholic saint, hermit, preacher, and founder of monasteries. He was born in Galatia around the year 848. From an early age, Euthymius felt called to a life of solitude and prayer. He sought a deep connection with God and dedicated himself to a life of asceticism. As a young man, he became a hermit on Mount Olympus, where he practiced rigorous self-discipline and devoted himself to prayer and meditation. Euthymius eventually felt led to move to Mount Athos in Greece. His reputation as a holy man and gifted preacher quickly spread, and he became well-known and respected in the area. Many sought his counsel and spiritual guidance, and he was revered for his wisdom and piety. Deeply inspired by his own experiences and the spiritual needs of those around him, Euthymius decided to establish a monastery in Salonika. There, he lived as a hermit for a period of time, providing spiritual instruction to the monks who joined him. The monastery flourished under his guidance, becoming a center of prayer and asceticism. However, Euthymius' desire for greater solitude ultimately led him to found another monastery, this time on and another one near Mount Athos. These monasteries became places of refuge for those seeking a life of prayer and contemplation. In his later years, Euthymius chose to retire from active ministry and returned to the solitary life of a hermit. He devoted himself entirely to prayer, spending his days and nights communing with God. His deep spirituality and commitment to a life of holiness inspired many who came into contact with him. Saint Euthymius the Younger died on 15th October 886, passing away peacefully from natural causes. Although not much is known about his specific patronage or physical representation, his legacy as a holy ascetic, preacher, and founder of monasteries lives on. Saint Euthymius the Younger was officially canonized as a saint, although the exact date of canonization is not recorded. His feast day is celebrated on 15th October. Today, Saint Euthymius the Younger is remembered for his unwavering devotion to God and his example of a life lived in deep communion with the divine. His teachings, writings, and monastic foundations continue to inspire and guide individuals in their spiritual journeys.
