Saint Faustus of Monte Cassino, also known as Faustus of Policastro, was a sixth-century Benedictine monk at the renowned Monte Cassino Abbey. He is best known as a spiritual student of Saint Benedict of Nursia, the father of Western monasticism. Born in Policastro, Italy, in the early sixth century, Faustus displayed a strong inclination towards a life of devotion and sought to deepen his spiritual understanding. Hearing of the renowned Monte Cassino Abbey and its influential abbot, Saint Benedict, Faustus decided to travel there and immerse himself in the monastic life. Under the guidance of Saint Benedict, Faustus studied deeply the Rule of Saint Benedict (a set of guidelines for monastic life) and embraced its principles wholeheartedly.
