Feast Day: September 18
Saint Ferreolus, also known as Ferreolus of Vienne, was a Tribune in the imperial Roman army stationed at Vienne, Gaul (modern France). He lived during the period of intense persecution of Christians under the rule of Emperor Diocletian. His courage and devotion to his faith have made him an exemplary figure in the annals of Christianity. Not much is known about Ferreolus' early life and background, but his name is associated with acts of great compassion and heroism during a time when being a Christian was highly perilous. One of the most notable incidents in his life involves his assistance to another saint, Julian of Brioude. During the reign of Diocletian, Julian, an ardent Christian, was being pursued by the anti-Christian authorities. It is believed that Ferreolus, possibly even Julian's superior officer, surreptitiously provided protection and hid him from those seeking to capture him. This act of defiance against the empire and solidarity with a fellow believer demonstrated Ferreolus' exceptional courage and dedication to his faith. Unfortunately, the local governor, Crispin, discovered Ferreolus' involvement and promptly arrested him. Ferreolus was subjected to severe punishment, including scourging, and was imprisoned. However, miraculously, he managed to escape from captivity. Despite his miraculous escape, Ferreolus remained resolute in his Christian commitment and refused to renounce his faith. His undying devotion led to his recapture by the authorities. Recognizing the threat he posed to their anti-Christian campaigns, Ferreolus was sentenced to martyrdom. On September 18, 304, Saint Ferreolus, the Tribune of Vienne, was martyred for his unwavering faith in Christ. His steadfastness in the face of persecution serves as an inspiration to countless believers throughout history. Saint Ferreolus was ultimately canonized as a saint, although the exact date of his canonization is not known. He is venerated as a martyr and is honored as the patron saint of Brioude, France, a testament to the impact he had on the local Christian community. While there may not be specific artistic representations of Saint Ferreolus, due to his association with Saint Julian of Brioude, he is often depicted alongside Julian in various Christian artwork and iconography. Saint Ferreolus The Tribune, a true exemplar of Christian courage and faith, continues to inspire believers in their own spiritual journeys today. His fortitude in the face of persecution demonstrates the enduring power of faith and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who stood firm in their beliefs during challenging times.
