Biography

Saint Fiace, also known as Fiacc, Fiach, or Fiech, was a renowned figure in the Catholic Church and a prominent saint in Ireland. He was born in 415 in Ireland, as the son of MacDara, a prince of Hy-Bairrche. His family lineage was noble, and he was related to the famous bard and convert, Dubhtach, who not only taught him to sing but also instilled in him a deep love for his Irish heritage. In his early life, Fiace married and became a layman, eventually becoming a father to a son named Fiacre. However, his spiritual journey took a transformative turn when he encountered Saint Patrick, the Apostle of Ireland. Under the influence of Saint Patrick, Fiace decided to embrace Christianity and became a fervent convert. Recognizing Fiace's dedication and sincerity, Saint Patrick ordained him to become a missionary bishop for Leinster, a province in Ireland. Fiace's ordination was a significant milestone for him, as he was chosen by Saint Patrick himself. Fiace's mission as a bishop was devoted to spreading the message of Christianity and establishing Christian communities across Leinster. He founded the churches and monasteries of Domnach-Fiech and Sletty, which became centers of spiritual growth and education in the region. These institutions were instrumental in nurturing the faith of countless individuals and cultivating a deep sense of community among the believers. Despite advancing age and an unnamed, painful condition that afflicted him in his later years, Saint Fiace never wavered in his commitment to fulfill his duties as a bishop. Saint Fiace's life of faith and service came to an end in the year 520, as he peacefully passed away from natural causes. His burial took place in his own church at Sletty, where he had devoted much of his time and effort in establishing an abode of devotion and holiness.
