Biography
Saint Flavius Clemens was a member of the Roman imperial family, brother of Emperor Vespasian and uncle to both Emperor Titus and Emperor Domitian. He married Flavia Domitilla, a niece of Domitian, binding him even more closely to the ruling dynasty. In 95 AD, Flavius Clemens served as imperial consul alongside Domitian himself, holding one of the highest offices in the Roman state. Despite his exalted position, Flavius Clemens embraced the Christian faith, a decision that placed him in grave danger. Within a year of his consulship, he was condemned and executed by order of Domitian on charges of atheism, the charge commonly leveled against Christians who refused to worship the Roman gods. His martyrdom stands as a powerful testimony to the reach of the early Church even into the highest circles of imperial power.
