Biography

Saint Fortunata of Baucina, also known as Fortunata of Rome, was a young woman who exemplified unwavering faith and courage in the face of persecution. Born around 182 in Palestrina, Rome, Italy, Fortunata converted to Christianity during her teenage years and became a devout follower of Christ. During the reign of the Roman Empire, the young saint faced immense challenges for remaining steadfast in her Christian beliefs. She was arrested and imprisoned by Imperial Roman troops due to her refusal to renounce her faith. Despite enduring physical torture and abuse, Fortunata stood firm and remained unwavering in her commitment to Christ. Not willing to abandon her beliefs, Saint Fortunata ultimately paid the ultimate price for her faith. In Rome, Italy, in the month of October in the year 200, she was martyred for her refusal to renounce Christianity. Her unyielding devotion and steadfastness in the face of persecution left a profound impact on those who witnessed her sacrifice. Following her execution, the relics of Saint Fortunata were buried in the Saint Ciriaca catacombs in Rome. Later, on 29th January 1750, her relics were transferred to the town of Baucina, Italy. She arrived there on 14th February 1750, and her remains were enshrined in the church of the Collegio di Maria. Saint Fortunata's patronage over Baucina, Italy was officially declared on 9th April 1870 due to the high level of devotion displayed by the local Christian community. Her feast days are celebrated on 14th February, based on the transfer of her relics, and the 2nd Sunday of September, which is the patronal feast for the town of Baucina. While there is not much information available about Saint Fortunata's representation, her story serves as an inspiring reminder of the courage and resilience of those who stood firm in their faith during times of persecution.
