Biography

Saint Francis Mary of Camporosso, also known as Francesco Maria da Camporosso, Giovanni Croese, John Croese, or Padre Santo, was born as Giovanni Croese on 27 December 1804 in Camporosso, Imperia, Italy. He was the son of Anselmo Croese and Maria Antonia Garza. At the age of two days, Giovanni was baptized, marking the beginning of his deep faith journey. Inspired by his calling to serve God, Giovanni joined the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin on 14 October 1822. He took the name Francis Mary, which reflected his profound devotion to Saint Francis of Assisi and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Francis Mary completed his novitiate at the convent of Saint Barnabas situated outside Genoa, Italy. From early on, Francis Mary's compassionate nature led him to engage in various works of charity. He dedicated himself to serving the poor, often found on the streets and docks where he tirelessly attended to their needs. His acts of kindness and genuine concern for the less fortunate made a significant impact on the community. Tragically, Francis Mary contracted cholera while caring for the sick during a cholera epidemic. This selfless act of mercy led to his ultimate sacrifice. He passed away on 17 September 1866 in Genoa, Italy, due to the disease he contracted while tending to those in need. The saintly virtues Francis Mary exhibited throughout his life did not go unnoticed. On 18 December 1922, Pope Pius XI recognized his heroic virtues and declared him venerable. This was followed by his beatification on 30 June 1929 by the same Pope, further affirming his sanctity. Finally, on 9 December 1962, Pope John XXIII canonized Francis Mary of Camporosso, officially recognizing him as a saint of the Catholic Church. His canonization served as a testament to his exemplary life, marked by selfless love, dedication to God, and tireless service to the poor and marginalized. Saint Francis Mary of Camporosso is venerated on 17 September, with some calendars also recognizing him on 19 September or 11 May. He is especially revered in his hometown of Camporosso, Italy, where he is honored as their patron saint. His life continues to inspire believers to emulate his love for God and neighbor and strive for sanctity in their own lives.
