Saint Gallicanus was a distinguished figure in Roman history as a ranking officer in the imperial army of Constantine the Great and as a Roman consul. Born in the 4th century, Gallicanus dedicated a significant portion of his life to serving the needs of others, especially the sick. After a long and successful career in the military and politics, Gallicanus made a profound decision in 330. He retired from his military and political duties and relocated to the coastal town of Ostia. It was there that he embarked on a new mission, founding a hospital with the primary goal of caring for the sick and vulnerable members of society. Gallicanus devoted the remainder of his life to this noble cause, becoming known as the true embodiment of compassion and selflessness.
Although some historical accounts mention that Gallicanus was exiled to Alexandria and martyred, these references are believed to be inaccurate. The legend surrounding his exile and martyrdom was likely a result of confusion or a later addition to his life story. The reality is that Gallicanus peacefully served in Ostia, touching the lives of countless individuals through his hospital and tireless efforts. Saint Gallicanus was venerated even before the formal canonization process was established within the Catholic Church.
