Biography

Saint Genesius of Brescello, also known as Genesius of Brixellum or Genesio, was a revered bishop of Brescello, Italy, and is believed to be one of the first bishops of this diocese. He was born in the latter part of the 4th century and died in the early 5th century in Brescello, Provincia di Reggio Emilia, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. Not much is known about the life of Saint Genesius of Brescello, but his impact on the local community and his sanctity have been widely recognized. He is revered as a bishop who dedicated himself to the spiritual wellbeing of his flock and the growth and development of the Church in Brescello. Throughout history, his relics have played a significant role in his veneration. The relics were initially discovered in the walls of an old church during the construction of a castle on the land in 968. This discovery led to the construction of a church and monastery in his honor on the same site, with the relics enshrined in the main altar of the abbey church. In 1408, Saint Genesius's arm bone was enshrined in a gilded copper sleeve-shaped reliquary. Subsequently, his relics were re-enshrined in the wall of the church of San Mauro, which was later renamed the church of Saint Mauro and Genesio. In 1746, the relics were once again transferred to a silver reliquary shaped like an arm, representing a blessing. The year 1797 witnessed the seizure of the monastic property by the Cisalpine Republic, leading to the relocation of the relics to the Chapel of the Most Blessed Sacrament in the parish Church of Santa Maria Nascente in Brescello. Then, in 1830, when the original church was under reconstruction, the relics found their place in the nearby Church of the Immaculate Conception. To this day, the relics of Saint Genesius of Brescello remain enshrined in a gold reliquary, housed in the Chapel of the Most Blessed Sacrament in the parish Church of Santa Maria Nascente. The faithful continue to venerate him, seeking his intercession and guidance. Though not officially canonized by the Catholic Church, Saint Genesius of Brescello is recognized as a saint by popular devotion and is esteemed as the patron saint of Brescello, Italy. His legacy endures as a symbol of faith, dedication, and perseverance, inspiring all those who turn to him with their prayers and intentions. On the liturgical calendar, his feast day is celebrated on August 25th.
