Biography

Saint Gerard Sagredo, also known as the Apostle of Hungary, was born on 23 April 980 in Venice, Italy. He entered the Benedictine Order and eventually became the abbot at the renowned San Giorgio Maggiore abbey in Venice. In the year 1030, while on a pilgrimage to Palestine, Saint Gerard passed through Hungary. During his time there, he had a fateful encounter with King Saint Stephen, who was impressed by his holiness and wisdom. King Saint Stephen convinced Saint Gerard to remain in Hungary and minister to the Magyars, the people of Hungary. Saint Gerard accepted this invitation and remained in the country. As a trusted and revered figure in Hungary, Saint Gerard became the tutor of Prince Saint Emeric, the son of King Saint Stephen. He played a crucial role in the education and spiritual formation of the young prince, instilling in him virtues and guiding him in his Christian faith. Recognizing Saint Gerard's exceptional qualities, King Saint Stephen appointed him as the first bishop of Csanad, Hungary in 1035. Saint Gerard embraced his episcopal duties with great zeal, working tirelessly to spread the teachings of Christ and establish the foundations of the Church in the region. Sadly, Saint Gerard's life was cut short by martyrdom. Following the death of King Saint Stephen, a pagan backlash erupted in Hungary, targeting the Christian community. On 24 September 1046, Saint Gerard was cruelly stabbed to death with a lance in Buda, Hungary. His body was callously thrown into the Danube River. Despite the destruction of his mortal remains, some of Saint Gerard's relics were eventually recovered and enshrined in the Basilica of San Donato in Murano, Venice, Italy. They serve as a testament to his sacrifice and enduring legacy. In recognition of his exceptional virtues and his dedication to the Hungarian people, Saint Gerard Sagredo was canonized by Pope Saint Gregory VII in 1083. His feast day is celebrated on 24 September, the day of his martyrdom. Saint Gerard Sagredo is widely venerated as the patron saint of Hungary. He is revered for his unwavering faith, his teachings, and his commitment to serving the people of Hungary in times of great turmoil. His life stands as a shining example of selflessness, courage, and devotion to God, leaving an indelible mark on the history of Hungary and the Catholic Church.
