Biography

Saint Gioan Ðoàn Trinh Hoan, also known as John Hoan, was a Catholic priest who served in the apostolic vicariate of North Cochinchina, which is now part of modern Vietnam. He dedicated his life to spreading the teachings of Christianity and evangelizing his fellow countrymen.

Born around 1798 in Kim-Long, Thùa Thiên, Vietnam, Saint Gioan Ðoàn Trinh Hoan grew up in a time of political turmoil and religious persecution. Despite the challenging circumstances, he pursued his vocation and was ordained as a priest in the Catholic Church.

During his ministry, Saint Gioan Ðoàn Trinh Hoan worked tirelessly to bring the message of the Gospel to the people of Vietnam. He faced numerous obstacles and dangers, as the country was under the rule of Emperor Tu-Duc, who vehemently opposed the spread of Christianity.

In 1861, during a period of intense persecution of Catholics in Vietnam, Saint Gioan Ðoàn Trinh Hoan met a martyr's death. He was beheaded on May 26, 1861, near Ðong Hoi, Quang Bình, for his unwavering commitment to his faith and refusal to renounce his beliefs.

Saint Gioan Ðoàn Trinh Hoan's martyrdom and sacrifice for the Catholic faith were recognized by the Church. On August 2, 1908, Pope Pius X decreed the veneration of this brave priest, acknowledging his holiness and dedication to the Christian cause.

Subsequently, on May 2, 1909, Pope Pius X beatified Saint Gioan Ðoàn Trinh Hoan, bestowing on him the title of Blessed. Although he has not been officially canonized, his beatification is a testament to his heroic virtues and his role as a model of inspiration for the faithful.

The life and martyrdom of Saint Gioan Ðoàn Trinh Hoan exemplify the resilience and unwavering faith of Vietnamese Catholics during a time of severe persecution. His memory is celebrated each year on May 26 and also on November 24, as one of the Martyrs of Vietnam.
