Biography

Saint Giuse Nguyen Ðình Uyen, also known as Giuseppe Nguyen Dinh Uyen or Joseph Peter Uyen, was a layman, Dominican tertiary, and catechist who lived during the 18th and 19th centuries in Vietnam. He was born around 1775 in Ninh Cuong, Nam Ðinh, East Tonkin, which is present-day Vietnam. Little is known about Saint Giuse Nguyen Ðình Uyen's early life and family background. However, it is believed that he grew up in a devout Catholic family and was deeply committed to his faith from a young age. Inspired by his strong religious convictions, he joined the Dominican Third Order as a layman, dedicating himself to a life of prayer, service, and evangelization. During this period, Vietnam was facing intense persecution of Christians under Emperor Minh Mang, who sought to eradicate Christianity from the country. Despite the dangers and risks involved, Saint Giuse Nguyen Ðình Uyen actively engaged in catechesis, teaching the Catholic faith to others and spreading the Gospel message. His commitment to proclaiming the Gospel and his unwavering faith became his ultimate strength but also the cause of his martyrdom. In 1838, Saint Giuse Nguyen Ðình Uyen was arrested and imprisoned for his refusal to renounce his Catholic beliefs. He endured immense suffering and ill-treatment while in prison in Hung Yên, East Tonkin. Saint Giuse Nguyen Ðình Uyen's steadfastness in his faith and his refusal to abandon his Catholic identity in the face of persecution became a powerful witness for other Christians in Vietnam. Despite the agony he experienced, he remained faithful to Christ until his last breath. He died on 4 July 1838, a martyr for the Catholic faith. In recognition of his heroic virtue and the sacrificial nature of his death, Pope Leo XIII decreed the venerability of Saint Giuse Nguyen Ðình Uyen on 2 July 1899. Less than a year later, on 27 May 1900, Pope Leo XIII beatified him, affirming his sanctity and his significant role as a witness of faith. Finally, on 19 June 1988, Pope John Paul II canonized Saint Giuse Nguyen Ðình Uyen, officially recognizing him as a saint in the Catholic Church. Although the exact details about his patronage are unknown, his example of unwavering faith and martyrdom continue to inspire and strengthen the faithful in their own spiritual journeys. Saint Giuse Nguyen Ðình Uyen's feast days are celebrated on 3 July and 24 November as one of the Martyrs of Vietnam.
