Not much is known about his early life, including his birthplace and family background. Saint Godwin served as the abbot of the monastery of Stavelot-Malmedy, which was a prominent religious institution in Belgium during the medieval period. As an abbot, he had the responsibility of overseeing the spiritual and administrative affairs of the monastery, as well as the welfare of the monks under his care.
