Biography

Saint Gunthiern was a Welsh prince who, according to historical documents, decided to forsake his privileged life in order to lead a life of solitude and devotion as a hermit in Brittany. Legend has it that Gunthiern was granted land on the Isle of Groie near the River Blavet by the local lord, Grallon, with the intention of establishing a monastery. This monastery, now known as the Benedictine house of Kemperle, continues to exist to this day.

One particularly notable event in the life of Saint Gunthiern revolves around a major threat to the region's crops. Insects were said to have swarmed the area, posing a serious risk to the agricultural livelihood of the community. Count Guerech I of Vannes, France, knowing of Saint Gunthiern's reputation for holiness and his ability to perform miracles, sought his assistance. Gunthiern blessed some water and had it sprinkled over the fields. Miraculously, the insects were driven away, and the crops were saved from disaster.

Saint Gunthiern was born in Wales and is believed to have died around the year 500 in Brittany, modern-day France, of natural causes. His body was hidden during the Norman invasions and subsequently lost for a time. However, in the 11th century, his remains were rediscovered. Recognizing his sanctity and the importance of his relics, they were translated to the Kemperle monastery for veneration.

Although there is limited information available regarding the patronage and representation of Saint Gunthiern, it is believed that he was venerated as a pre-congregation saint. His feast day is celebrated on July 3rd.

The life of Saint Gunthiern stands as a testament to his unwavering devotion and willingness to sacrifice his worldly status to pursue a life of contemplation and service to others. His miraculous act in saving the crops of the region further demonstrates his connection to the divine and his ability to intercede on behalf of those in need. Today, Saint Gunthiern remains an inspiration for those seeking a life of spiritual dedication and selflessness.
