Biography

Saint Hedda of Peterborough was a Benedictine abbot of Peterborough Abbey. He is remembered for his undying faith and martyrdom along with many of his fellow monks, at the hands of pagan Danish raiders. Hedda's early life remains mostly unknown, with little information available about his upbringing, family, or education. However, it is believed that he was born in England during the 9th century. Hedda rose to prominence as an esteemed member of the Benedictine Order. He became the abbot of Peterborough Abbey, located in what is now the city of Peterborough, England. As the abbot, Hedda was responsible for leading and guiding the monks in their spiritual and temporal affairs. During his time as abbot, Hedda and his community faced great adversity in the form of Danish raiders who frequently ravaged the shores of England.
