Saint Heraclius of Campania, also known as Heraclius of North Africa, was a priest who lived during the time when the Arian Vandals ruled parts of North Africa. During the height of the Arian Vandals' persecution of Catholics, Saint Heraclius steadfastly remained committed to his priestly duties, encouraging the faithful and offering the sacraments. His unwavering devotion to the Catholic faith brought him into conflict with the Vandals, and he was soon subjected to severe torture. In an act of extreme cruelty, the Vandals exiled Saint Heraclius by placing him in a boat without a rudder and setting him adrift on the open sea.
It was a punishment designed to be both torturous and fatal, as being stranded on the sea without any means of direction or sustenance would surely lead to his demise. However, through divine intervention, the boat carrying Saint Heraclius miraculously landed in the region of Campania, located in southern Italy. Despite the hardships he had endured at the hands of the Vandals, Heraclius eagerly resumed his ministry among the people of Campania, tirelessly working to strengthen the faith of the local community. Saint Heraclius of Campania became known as one of the Exiles of Campania, a group of religious figures who faced similar circumstances during the era of Vandal persecution. These exiles, including Saint Maximus and Saint Boniface, found solace and strength in their shared experiences, as they pursued their religious callings in the face of adversity.
