Biography
Saint Invenzio of Pavia, also known by various names such as Evencija, Evencio, Evenzio, Invencij, Invencito, Iuvence, Iuventius, Jovencio, and Juvencij, was a Bishop of Pavia, Italy, who lived from 381 to 397. He was chosen for this important role by Saint Ambrose of Milan, demonstrating his esteemed reputation and qualities as a leader of the Church. Little is known about Saint Invenzio's early life, but his contribution as the Bishop of Pavia has been well-documented. He served diligently and wholeheartedly, dedicated to spreading the message of the Gospel in his diocese. He was known as a tireless evangelist, constantly striving to share the faith with those around him. During his episcopacy, Saint Invenzio played a significant role in various ecclesiastical gatherings. He attended the Council of Aquileia in 390, where he joined other prominent bishops in addressing important theological matters. At the Council of Milan, he signed a letter that condemned the theological errors of Jovinian, a heretic of the time. These events highlight Saint Invenzio's commitment to preserving the orthodoxy and unity of the Catholic faith. Saint Invenzio's devotion to his flock was unwavering, and he worked diligently to address the needs of his diocese. His pastoral care and guidance were deeply appreciated by the people of Pavia. His own life and example served as an inspiration, encouraging the faithful to deepen their relationship with God and live virtuous lives. Saint Invenzio passed away in February 397 in Pavia, Italy, due to natural causes. He was laid to rest in the church of Saints Nazario and Celso, which was later renamed in his honor. In 1574, his relics were rediscovered and subsequently re-enshrined in 1789 when the church was damaged. Although canonization as we understand it today did not exist during his time, he is venerated as a saint by tradition and is recognized as such by the Pre-Congregation phase of the Catholic Church. While Saint Invenzio does not have a specific patronage associated with his name, his life and faithfulness to his episcopal responsibilities continue to inspire believers to this day. His feast days are celebrated on 8 February and, on some calendars, 12 September, though there is some confusion with Saint Juventius of Pavia.
