Saint Iosephus Wang Yumei, also known as Joseph or Ruose, was a layman born around 1832 in Weixian, Hebei, China. He lived during a time of great turmoil and persecution for Catholics in China. Saint Iosephus was a faithful member of the apostolic vicariate of Southeastern Zhili. Little is known about Saint Iosephus' early life and family, but his steadfast commitment to the Catholic faith during a period marked by the Boxer Rebellion speaks volumes about his character. The Boxer Rebellion was an antiforeign and anti-Christian movement in China that targeted missionaries and Chinese converts to Christianity. Saint Iosephus worked closely with the Catholic community in the region, supporting the mission activities of the apostolic vicariate. As a layman, he tirelessly spread the teachings of the Catholic Church and provided material and spiritual support to fellow believers. Tragically, in the midst of the Boxer Rebellion, Saint Iosephus became one of the many victims of religious persecution. On July 21, 1900, he was martyred for his unwavering faith in Daning, Weixian, Hebei, China. His courageous refusal to renounce his Catholic beliefs, even in the face of severe persecution, earned him a place among the Martyrs of China. Saint Iosephus' life and sacrifice have been recognized and honored by the Catholic Church. On February 22, 1955, Pope Pius XII declared him venerable, acknowledging the heroic nature of his death. Just a few months later, on April 17, 1955, Pope Pius XII beatified him, officially recognizing his martyrdom. Finally, on October 1, 2000, Saint Iosephus Wang Yumei was canonized by Pope John Paul II, becoming a recognized saint in the Catholic Church. Although specific details about his patronage are not available, Saint Iosephus Wang Yumei remains an inspiration and intercessor for Catholics around the world, particularly those facing persecution for their faith. His feast days are celebrated on July 21 and September 28, alongside other Chinese Martyrs. Saint Iosephus Wang Yumei's life serves as a reminder of the love and commitment to the Catholic faith that is shared by believers around the world. His martyrdom in the Boxer Rebellion is a testament to the strength and conviction that fueled the spreading of Christ's message, even in the face of great adversity.
