Saint Irenaeus of Thessalonica, also known as Irenaeus of Sirmium, was a Christian martyr who lived during the late 3rd century. He was born in Thessalonica, a city in the Roman province of Macedonia (modern-day Greece). Little is known about his early life or family background. During the reign of Emperor Diocletian, one of the most severe persecutions of Christians took place. Irenaeus, along with many other followers of the Christian faith, became a target of this persecution. He was known for his unwavering devotion to God and unwavering faith, which made him a particular target for the authorities. Saint Irenaeus was captured by the Roman authorities and subjected to intense interrogation and torture, as they sought to force him to renounce his faith.
