Saint John Breadandwater, also known as John Pan y Agua, was a Benedictine Cistercian lay-brother who lived in the Sangramenia Abbey in Spain during the 12th century. He is well-known for his life-long dedication to a strict bread-and-water fast, which earned him his nickname. Not much is known about Saint John Breadandwater's early life or background. However, it is believed that he was born during the 11th century. He chose a life of devotion and entered the Sangramenia Abbey at a young age, where he became a lay-brother. As a lay-brother, Saint John Breadandwater embraced a simple and austere lifestyle, focusing on prayer, hard work, and self-discipline. One of his most striking practices was his commitment to a bread-and-water fast.
