Biography

Saint John Maria Muzeyi, also known as Jean-Marie Muzeeyi, Jean-Marie the Elder, and John Mary Mzec, was a member of the Mbogo clan and a member of the Ugandan royal court. He is widely recognized as one of the Martyrs of Uganda who died in the Mwangan persecutions, and he holds the distinction of being the last martyr to die in that particular persecution. Born in Buganda, Uganda, John Maria Muzeyi embraced Christianity and converted to Catholicism during a time when Catholicism faced significant opposition in Uganda. Despite the dangers and risks involved, he remained steadfast in his faith and lived as a devout Catholic. In 1885, King Mwanga II of Buganda launched a violent campaign against Christians, specifically targeting members of the royal court who had converted to Christianity. John Maria Muzeyi, being a court member and a devout Catholic, became a prime target. The Mwangan persecutions were marked by extreme brutality, and many Christians suffered unspeakable torture and death as a result. However, John Maria Muzeyi remained courageous and resolute in his faith until the very end. On January 27, 1887, he was beheaded at Mengo, Uganda, becoming the last martyr to die in the Mwangan persecutions. After his death, devotion to John Maria Muzeyi grew among the Catholic community in Uganda. Recognizing his martyrdom and unwavering faith, Pope Benedict XV venerated him on February 29, 1920, through a decree of martyrdom. Later that year, on June 6, 1920, Pope Benedict XV beatified John Maria Muzeyi, honoring his sacrifice and contribution to the Catholic faith. Finally, on October 18, 1964, Pope Paul VI canonized John Maria Muzeyi as a saint in a ceremony held in Rome, Italy. His canonization served as a testament to his exemplary life and his status as a role model for Catholics around the world. Though there is limited information available about Saint John Maria Muzeyi's specific patronages or any unique representations associated with him, his legacy as a martyr and his unwavering commitment to his faith continue to inspire and guide Catholic believers. His feast days are celebrated on January 27 and June 3, commemorating his martyrdom and his role as one of the Martyrs of Uganda.
