Biography

Saint Jonas of Hubaham, also known as Jonah of Hubaham, was a devout monk who became known for his unwavering faith and dedication to ministering to Christians imprisoned for their faith in Persia. He is believed to have been born in Beth-Asa, Persia, although little is known about his early life. Jonas embarked on a spiritual journey alongside his brother, Saint Barachisius, who was also a monk. Recognizing the plight of their fellow Christians who were suffering persecution under the reign of King Sapor II, they set out to Hubaham, Persia, with the intention of providing them solace and support. Arriving in Hubaham, Jonas and Barachisius fearlessly engaged in their mission, ministering to the imprisoned Christians and offering them comfort and encouragement. However, their acts of compassion and refusal to worship the pagan deities of the time caught the attention of King Sapor II's officials. The brothers were soon arrested and subjected to severe torture and persecution for their refusal to renounce their faith. Eyewitness descriptions of their trial and execution have been preserved, testifying to the barbarity they endured for their beliefs. Despite the brutal treatment, Jonas and Barachisius persisted in their faith until the end. On the 24th of December in 327, Saint Jonas was tormented further by being beaten with clubs and having a stake pushed into his abdomen. He was then thrown into a freezing pond to spend the night. Remarkably, Jonas survived the night in the icy waters, prompting his captors to resort to further measures of cruelty. They severed his fingers and toes before subjecting him to a grisly death in a wine press. Finally, after his life had been taken, his corpse was cut in two and discarded into a dry cistern, guarded to prevent any Christian followers from retrieving his relics. Although Saint Jonas of Hubaham did not receive formal canonization through the Pre-Congregation process, his martyrdom and unwavering commitment to his faith have made him widely venerated among the faithful. His feast day is celebrated on 29th March. Saint Jonas's story stands as a powerful testament to his courage, self-sacrifice, and devotion to the Christian cause. His life serves as an inspiration for believers to remain steadfast in their faith, even in the face of extreme hardships and persecution. May Saint Jonas of Hubaham intercede for us and guide us in our own spiritual journeys.
