Biography
Saint María Maravillas De Jesús, born to the Marquess and Marchioness of Pidal, Luis Pidal y Mon (Spanish Ambassador to the Vatican and devoted Church supporter) and Cristina Chico de Guzman y Munoz, entered the world in a household steeped in faith and service. Baptized at eight days old, she received Confirmation in 1896 and First Holy Communion in 1902, nurtured from childhood in a pious environment that recognized her profound intelligence and early religious disposition. Perceiving a divine call to consecrated life, she entered the Carmelite novitiate at El Escorial, Madrid, in 1920. On 19 May 1924, with three companions, she co-founded the Carmelite community at Cerro de los Angeles, Madrid, the geographical heart of Spain, and took her final vows there on 30 May 1924. Elected Prioress in 1926, her leadership guided the rapid expansion of the community. Responding to the Church’s needs, she was entrusted with the mission to establish a new Carmelite house in Kottayam, India, marking a significant step in the order’s missionary outreach. Though her earthly life concluded before the full scope of her Indian foundation was realized, her legacy endures through the vibrant Carmelite community she established in Madrid and the pioneering spirit she embodied in founding the order’s presence in India, reflecting her unwavering dedication to God’s work.
