Saint Margaret The Barefooted, also known as Margaret of Cesolo, Margaret la Picena, and Margherita, was born into poverty in the small village of Cesolo, San Severino, Italy, in the year 1325. Despite her humble beginnings, she possessed a deep faith and a strong devotion to the Church from a young age. At the tender age of fifteen, Margaret was married off to an Italian gentleman, yet her marriage was far from a happy one. Her husband, resentful of her devotion to the Church and her constant care for the poor, subjected her to years of abuse and mistreatment. However, Margaret's unwavering commitment to her faith kept her spirit and resolve alive during this difficult period. In a unique act of devotion and solidarity with the impoverished and marginalized, Margaret chose to give up wearing shoes. By embracing the barefooted life, she aimed to symbolically connect herself with the poor and destitute, who often lacked even the most basic necessities. Clad in tattered garments, Margaret intentionally appeared as a beggar, seeking to better associate herself with those she served. Tragedy struck Margaret when her husband passed away, leaving her widowed. This event, although bringing a sense of relief from the abuse, did not diminish her calling to help those in need. On the contrary, it emboldened her, allowing her to dedicate herself fully to her ministries. Margaret's acts of charity and compassion resonated deeply with those around her, and her reputation as a tireless advocate for the poor quickly spread. Her selflessness and genuine care for others served as an inspiration to many, and she became beloved by the community. Throughout her life, Margaret faced numerous challenges and hardships, but her unwavering faith sustained her. She dedicated herself to prayer, spending countless hours in contemplation and seeking God's guidance. Margaret's profound love of God fueled her determination to help those affected by difficult marriages, abuse, and the pain of widowhood. On August 5, 1395, at the age of seventy, Saint Margaret The Barefooted passed away peacefully from natural causes. Her legacy, however, continued to thrive long after her death. Devotion to her and the miracles attributed to her intercession grew over time, leading to her canonization as a saint. Saint Margaret The Barefooted is venerated as the patron saint of brides, difficult marriages, victims of abuse, and widows. Her feast day is celebrated on the 5th of August each year, a time when faithful believers honor her life and seek her intercession.
