Biography

Saint Maximus of Aquila, also known as Maximus of Aveia or Massimo, was born around the year 228 in Aveia, Italy. He was raised in a devoutly Catholic family and grew up with a deep love for his faith. Maximus felt a strong calling to serve the Church and became an enthusiastic deacon in Aveia. As he grew older, Maximus aspired to the priesthood and dedicated himself to studying and practicing his faith. He was known for his zealousness and lived an open and unapologetic Christian life, even during a time of intense persecution under the Roman Emperor Decius. Unfortunately, Maximus' unwavering commitment to his faith led to his arrest and subsequent imprisonment. He endured brutal torture and interrogation, all for refusing to renounce his Christian beliefs. Despite the immense suffering, Maximus remained steadfast in his faith and refused to betray his God. Finally, in the year 250, Maximus met his martyrdom. He was taken to the cliffs of Aveia and thrown off, sacrificing his life for his faith. His body was left at the foot of the cliff. After his martyrdom, Maximus' relics were initially transferred to Civitas Sancti Maximi, which is now known as Forcona, Italy. The exact date of this transfer remains unknown, but it is known to have taken place on June 10th, 956. Eventually, his relics were enshrined in the cathedral in Aquila, Italy in 1256. Tragically, the relics of Saint Maximus of Aquila were destroyed in 1703 by a devastating earthquake that struck the region. However, his memory and devotion continue to inspire the faithful in Aquila and beyond. Saint Maximus of Aquila is venerated as a martyr and a patron saint of both Aquila and Penne, Italy. His feast day is celebrated on October 20th, although on some calendars it is also commemorated on June 10th. Though he lived during a time of great persecution, Saint Maximus of Aquila remained resolute in his faith and gave his life as a testament to his unwavering devotion to God. His example serves as an inspiration to all those who face adversity and challenges in their own faith journeys.
