Death: January 1, 1187
Saint Nicasius of Jerusalem, also known as Nicasius Burgio, Nicasius Camuto de Burgio, Nicasius de Burgo, Nicasius of Sicily, Nicasius the Martyr, Nicasio, and Nicaise, was born around 1135 in Sicily, Italy. He was a soldier and a member of the Knights Hospitaller. Nicasius fought valiantly in the defense of Acre during the Crusades. Acre was a strategic coastal city in Palestine, and it was a major target for the Saracens. Nicasius displayed great bravery and loyalty in the face of danger, earning him a reputation as a skilled warrior. Unfortunately, during the battle, Nicasius was captured by the Saracens. They demanded him to renounce his Christian faith and convert to Islam. However, Nicasius remained steadfast in his beliefs and refused to renounce Christianity. He chose martyrdom over apostasy. In 1187, at the age of 52, Nicasius was brutally beheaded by the Saracens for his unwavering faith. His martyrdom was a testament to his dedication to Christ and his refusal to compromise his beliefs, even in the face of death. Saint Nicasius is often represented as a knight or soldier, symbolizing his brave and courageous spirit. His martyrdom serves as an inspiration to Christians to remain faithful to their beliefs, even in the most challenging circumstances. Although there is no official record of Nicasius' canonization, an altar dedicated to him was known to exist in 1305 in the church of Saint Peter in Trapani, Italy. Additionally, on October 17, 1609, Cardinal Doria Giannettino ordered a feast of obligation in Caccamo, Italy, in honor of San Nicasio. Saint Nicasius is recognized as the patron saint against scrofula and is particularly venerated in Caccamo, Italy, where he is considered a protector of the town. This devotion was officially declared on May 31, 1625. The life of Saint Nicasius of Jerusalem truly exemplifies the courage and unwavering faith of a true Christian warrior. His sacrifice continues to inspire Christians around the world to stand firm in their beliefs, even in the face of persecution.
