Biography

Saint Padre Pio, also known as Francesco Forgione, was born on 25 May 1887 in Pietrelcina, Benevento, Italy. He came from a humble farming family, and at the age of 15, he entered the novitiate of the Capuchin friars in Morcone, Italy. A few years later, at the age of 19, he officially joined the Capuchin order. Throughout his life, Padre Pio experienced various health issues, and at one point, his family feared he had tuberculosis. However, this did not deter his determination to serve God and his community. On 10 August 1910, at the young age of 22, he was ordained as a priest, committing himself entirely to his calling. It was on 20 September 1918 that Padre Pio experienced a profound mystical encounter. While praying before a cross, he received the stigmata, becoming the first priest in history to be blessed with this extraordinary manifestation of Christ's wounds. News of his stigmata quickly spread, attracting both religious pilgrims and the simply curious to witness this miraculous phenomenon. Padre Pio was renowned for his ability to hear confessions for hours on end, demonstrating a keen ability to discern the hidden sins of those who visited him. Many considered him a living saint, believing he possessed the power of bilocation, levitation, and the ability to heal through touch. In 1956, Padre Pio established the House for the Relief of Suffering (Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza) in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy. This hospital provided medical care to thousands of patients annually and still operates today, serving as a testament to Padre Pio's commitment to healing the sick and alleviating suffering. During the 1920s, Padre Pio initiated prayer groups that grew in number and continue to flourish with over 400,000 members worldwide. These prayer groups cultivate spirituality and foster a sense of community among believers. The miracle that led to Padre Pio's canonization involved the miraculous cure of a young boy named Matteo Pio Colella. Matteo, the seven-year-old son of a doctor associated with the House for the Relief of Suffering, was admitted to the hospital's intensive care unit with meningitis. His condition worsened to the point where doctors had lost hope, with nine of his organs showing no signs of life. However, a prayer vigil was held that evening, attended by Matteo's mother and some Capuchin friars from Padre Pio's monastery. During the vigil, Matteo's condition unexpectedly improved, and when he regained consciousness, he shared a remarkable vision. He claimed to have seen an elderly man with a white beard and a long, brown habit who assured him of his imminent recovery. This miraculous intervention led to the approval of the healing as a genuine miracle by the Congregation and Pope John Paul II on 20 December 2001. Saint Padre Pio's extraordinary life and profound spirituality captured the hearts of believers worldwide. He showcased an unwavering devotion to Christ, a dedication to serving others through his ministry and hospital, and an ability to inspire and guide countless individuals through prayer. Padre Pio's virtues and holiness were recognized by Pope John Paul II, who declared him venerable on 18 December 1997. Just a year later, on 2 May 1999, the pope beatified him, acknowledging his closeness to God and his significant impact on the faithful. Finally, on 16 June 2002, Pope John Paul II canonized Padre Pio, affirming his status as a saint in the Catholic Church. Although Padre Pio did not have an official patronage, he is revered by many as a patron of healing, suffering, and those seeking spiritual guidance. His legacy lives on, his prayers and intercession continuing to touch the lives of people worldwide.
