Biography

Saint Paulus Ge Tingzhu, also known as Baolu or Paul Ke Tingzhu, was a dedicated Catholic layman hailing from Xiaotun, Shenzhou, Hebei, China. Born around the year 1839, he spent his entire life in the apostolic vicariate of Southeastern Zhili. Paulus Ge Tingzhu was primarily a farmer, working diligently to support himself and his family. Yet, his faith in God was the driving force behind his entire existence. He embraced his role as a leader within the local Christian community, guiding and inspiring fellow believers in his village. His dedication to his faith and compassionate nature made him beloved among his peers. The Boxer Rebellion, a violent anti-imperialist and anti-Christian movement that took place in China from 1899 to 1901, brought immense suffering to the Christian community. Saint Paulus Ge Tingzhu became a martyr during this period due to his steadfast refusal to renounce his Catholic faith. In the face of brutal persecution, he remained resolute and unyielding, remaining true to his beliefs until the very end. The persecutors tortured and eventually murdered him on August 8, 1900. He was tied to a tree, and pieces of his body were ruthlessly cut off until he succumbed to blood loss and shock in his hometown of Xiaotun, Shenzhou. Recognizing his unwavering faith and sacrifice, Saint Paulus Ge Tingzhu was venerated on February 22, 1955, when Pope Pius XII declared him a martyr. Just a few months later, on April 17, 1955, Pope Pius XII beatified him, acknowledging him as a blessed soul who had given up his life for his faith. Finally, on October 1, 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Saint Paulus Ge Tingzhu, officially recognizing him as a saint of the Catholic Church. His feast days are celebrated on August 8 and September 28, as one of the Martyrs of China, commemorating his courageous witness and ultimate sacrifice. As a patron saint, Saint Paulus Ge Tingzhu is particularly venerated by the Nan Catholic community, who seek his intercession and guidance in their spiritual journeys. Saint Paulus Ge Tingzhu's life stands as a testament to the unyielding faith and unwavering commitment of countless Catholics who faced persecution during challenging times. His story continues to inspire and remind believers of the price that sometimes must be paid for staying true to one's convictions.
