Saint Peter of Morocco

Saint Peter of Morocco, also known as Peter of Sassari, was a Franciscan Friar Minor who dedicated his life to evangelizing the Moors of the West. Born in Sassari, Italy, Peter joined the Franciscans and followed in the footsteps of his spiritual mentor, Saint Francis of Assisi. Inspired by Saint Francis' desire to preach the Gospel to all nations, Peter embarked on a mission to bring Christianity to the Moors. Alongside his fellow missionaries, he traveled to various regions including Italy, Aragon, Coimbra, Seville, and ultimately, Morocco. They preached the teachings of Jesus Christ with great fervor, even in the face of adversity. During their time in Morocco, Peter and his companions were banished from the country due to their relentless determination to share the Good News. Despite this setback, they returned to Morocco and continued their evangelization efforts. However, their dedication came at great cost. On January 16, 1220, Saint Peter of Morocco suffered a martyr's death. According to historical accounts, Saint Peter was subjected to unimaginable torture. He was scourged until his ribs were exposed, had burning oil and vinegar poured into his wounds, and was rolled on sharp stones and potsherds. Finally, his head was split by a sword. The brutality he endured is a testament to his unwavering faith and determination to spread the message of Christ's love. After his death, the relics of Saint Peter of Morocco were ransomed and are now housed in the monastery of the Holy Cross in Coimbra, Portugal. These relics serve as a reminder of his sacrifice and continue to inspire reverence among the faithful. In recognition of his extraordinary commitment to the faith, Saint Peter of Morocco was canonized in 1481 by Pope Sixtus IV. His canonization affirmed his status as a revered saint within the Catholic Church. Although Saint Peter of Morocco's patronage is not recorded, his life serves as an exemplary model of devotion and courage in the face of persecution. Through his martyrdom, he has become a spiritual guide, teaching believers to remain steadfast in their faith and spread the message of God's love, even in the most challenging circumstances.
