Saint Petrus Liu Zeyu

Saint Petrus Liu Zeyu, also known as Peter Liu Ziyu or Baiduo, was a layman in the apostolic vicariate of Southeastern Zhili, China. He was born around 1843 in Zhujiaxie, Shenzhou, Hebei, China. Although not much is known about his early life, it is clear that he was a devout Catholic who held fast to his faith in the face of immense persecution. During the Boxer Rebellion in the late 19th century, a time of intense anti-Christian sentiment in China, Saint Petrus Liu Zeyu was confronted by a Mandarin who ordered him to renounce his Christian beliefs. Despite the great danger he faced, Saint Petrus courageously refused to renounce his faith. His refusal to abandon his Catholicism led to him being deemed a threat to the anti-Christian movement and marked him for martyrdom. On July 17, 1900, in his hometown of Zhujiaxie, Shenzhou, Saint Petrus was beheaded for his unwavering commitment to Christ. His martyrdom serves as a testament to his deep love for God and his unwavering dedication to the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church recognized Saint Petrus Liu Zeyu's heroic virtue, and he was venerated on February 22, 1955, when Pope Pius XII issued a decree of martyrdom. On April 17, 1955, Pope Pius XII further elevated him to the rank of Blessed. Finally, on October 1, 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized him, declaring Saint Petrus Liu Zeyu a saint of the Catholic Church. As a saint, Saint Petrus Liu Zeyu holds a special place in the hearts of many Chinese Catholics. He is honored and remembered on his feast days, which are celebrated on July 17th and September 28th as one of the Martyrs of China. While Saint Petrus is not specifically designated as the patron of any particular group or cause, his intercession is sought by the faithful, especially those facing persecution or struggling to remain faithful in challenging circumstances. Saint Petrus Liu Zeyu's life and martyrdom serve as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by countless Chinese Christians during a time of great hostility toward the Catholic faith. His example of unwavering faithfulness continues to inspire and challenge believers today, urging them to remain steadfast in their love for God, even in the face of adversity.
