Biography

Saint Petrus Wang Zuolung, also known as Baiduo, Peter Wang Zuolong, or Pietro Wang Zuolong, was a devout Catholic layman who lived during a tumultuous period in China's history. He was born around 1842 in Shuanzhong, Jizhou, Hebei, China. Petrus Wang Zuolung dedicated his life to his faith and became a faithful member of the apostolic vicariate of Southeastern Zhili, China. He lived at a time when anti-Catholic sentiments were rising in the country, fueled by the Boxer Rebellion, a violent anti-foreign and anti-Christian movement that sought to expel foreign influences from China. During the Boxer Rebellion, Petrus Wang Zuolung was taken captive by the anti-Catholic forces. He was forcefully dragged in front of idols, where he was ordered to renounce his Christian faith. Despite the immense pressure and threats, Petrus Wang Zuolung steadfastly refused to renounce his beliefs. He displayed immense courage and unwavering devotion to his faith. Ultimately, Petrus Wang Zuolung's refusal to renounce Christianity led to his martyrdom. On July 6, 1900, in his hometown of Shuanzhong, Jizhou, Hebei, China, he was executed for his faith. His martyrdom stands as a testament to his deep commitment to Christ and his unwavering dedication to the Catholic Church. After his death, Petrus Wang Zuolung's reputation as a holy man grew, and he was venerated for his martyrdom and exemplary witness to the faith. His cause for canonization was officially opened, and on February 22, 1955, Pope Pius XII recognized his martyrdom with a decree. On April 17, 1955, Pope Pius XII beatified Petrus Wang Zuolung, declaring him blessed. This beatification further acknowledged his heroism and the sanctity of his life. Finally, on October 1, 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Petrus Wang Zuolung as a saint of the Catholic Church. This official recognition elevated him to the status of a revered patron of the faith, inspiring countless individuals with his life of faithfulness, courage, and self-sacrifice. Saint Petrus Wang Zuolung's life serves as an inspiration for believers, reminding them of the importance of staying true to their faith, even in the face of persecution and adversity. His example of steadfastness and martyrdom continues to resonate with Catholics around the world, making him a beloved figure in the history of Chinese Catholicism. Though not associated with a particular patronage, he remains a symbol of Christian fortitude and unwavering devotion.
