Biography
Saint Phaolô Nguyen Van My, also known as Paul My, was a convert and martyr who played a significant role in spreading the Catholic faith in Vietnam. He was born around 1798 in Ke Non, Hà Nam, Vietnam, and dedicated his life to serving God.
Phaolô Nguyen Van My joined the Paris Foreign Missions, an organization committed to preaching the Gospel and establishing Catholic communities throughout the world. As part of this mission, he traveled back to his homeland of Vietnam, where he played a vital role in the evangelization of the local population.
During this time, Vietnam was under strong anti-Catholic sentiments and persecution, as the ruling powers viewed the growing influence of Christianity as a threat. Despite the dangers, Phaolô Nguyen Van My fearlessly carried out his missionary work.
On December 18, 1838, in Son Tây, Ha Tay, Vietnam, Phaolô Nguyen Van My was tragically strangled to death due to his unwavering faith and commitment to spreading the Gospel. His martyrdom was a testament to his steadfast devotion to God and love for his fellow Vietnamese.
In recognition of his sacrifice and devotion, Phaolô Nguyen Van My was venerated on July 2, 1899, by Pope Leo XIII, who declared him a martyr. Finally, on June 19, 1988, Pope John Paul II canonized Phaolô Nguyen Van My, declaring him a saint of the Catholic Church.
