Biography

Saint Quirinus of Sescia, also known as Quirinus of Siscia, Kvirin, Quirino, or Quirinius, was a revered Catholic Bishop of Sescia, which is present-day Sisak, Croatia. He lived during the 3rd century and played a significant role in defending his faith during the persecution under Emperor Galerius. As a devoted bishop, Saint Quirinus fearlessly proclaimed the teachings of Christianity, even in the face of intense opposition. During the reign of Emperor Galerius, who sought to eradicate the Christian faith, Saint Quirinus was commanded to offer sacrifices to pagan gods. Firmly adhering to his convictions, he courageously refused to comply with this demand, fully aware of the consequences that awaited him. The Emperor, enraged by Saint Quirinus' refusal, ordered his arrest and imprisonment. While incarcerated, Saint Quirinus endured severe beatings and various forms of torture aimed at coercing him to renounce his faith. However, despite the physical torment he endured, he unwaveringly held onto his Christian beliefs and remained steadfast in his devotion to God. It was during his time in prison that Saint Quirinus performed a great act of grace. He managed to convert his jailer, a man named Marcellus, to Christianity. Although Saint Quirinus' representation and specific iconography are not known, his memory and devotion have endured throughout history. His feast day is celebrated on June 4th, commemorating his martyrdom, selfless sacrifice, and unwavering faith. He was formally recognized as a saint before the establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, during a time known as the Pre-Congregation. Saint Quirinus holds a place of special patronage within the Catholic faith. He is invoked for protection against evil spirits, for deliverance from obsession, and for the healing of possessed individuals. Additionally, he is recognized as the patron saint of San Quirino in Italy and Sisak in Croatia, two locations where his faith and martyrdom have left a lasting impact.
