Biography

Saint Rolende of Gerpinnes, also known as Rolendis, was born in the 8th century in northern Gaul (modern France). She was the daughter of King Didier of the Lombards, who was in exile after being defeated in battle by Blessed Charlemagne. Despite being born into royalty, Rolende felt a deep calling to dedicate her life to God. When an arranged marriage was proposed to Prince Oger of Scotland, Rolende knew that it was not part of God's plan for her. Filled with determination, she escaped from the palace and embarked on a journey towards the Sainte-Ursule convent in Cologne, Germany. However, fate intervened when she fell seriously ill while en route. Rolende found herself in the village of Villers-Poterie, where she ended up staying for a significant period of time due to her sickness. During her time in the village, the holy nature of Rolende became evident to the residents as they learned her story and witnessed her devoutness. They recognized her as a woman of holiness and devotion to God. Sadly, Rolende's illness grew worse, ultimately leading to her passing in Villers-Poterie in 774. Her death was attributed to natural causes. Given Rolende's sanctity, the villagers regarded her as a saint, and her grave quickly became a place of pilgrimage due to the healing miracles that were reported there. To honor the memory and sacredness of Saint Rolende, her relics were disinterred in May 1103 by Otbert, the prince-bishop of Liège, Belgium. The relics were enshrined in the church crypt in Gerpinnes, Belgium. Ever since then, a centuries-old tradition of procession with her relics has taken place through all the local hamlets that were formerly a part of the territory of her parish church. Though Saint Rolende's life and sanctity remain a part of pre-congregation history, she continues to be venerated as a beloved saint and patron of Gerpinnes, Belgium. Her feast day is celebrated on May 13th each year, bringing together devotees who honor her as a source of inspiration and intercession. Saint Rolende's story serves as a reminder that even in the midst of challenges and suffering, one can find God's grace and demonstrate a deep faith that inspires others. Her life teaches us the importance of following God's calling, even when it may lead us on unexpected paths, and the power of holiness to touch the lives of those around us.
