Biography

Saint Severinus of Septempeda, also known as Severinus of Naples or Severino, was born in Septempeda, modern-day San Severino Marche, Italy. He was the brother of Saint Victorinus of Camerino, and together they dedicated their lives to serving God and helping the poor in their region. The brothers selflessly distributed their wealth to those in need and eventually retired to live as hermits on Monte Nero, Italy.

Their devotion to God and their altruistic ways caught the attention of Pope Vigilius, who ordered Severinus to become the Bishop of Septempeda, an area located in the Marches of Ancona, Italy. Severinus wholeheartedly accepted this responsibility and embarked on a mission to revive the faith in his diocese. His dedication and efforts were so profound that the town was later renamed San Severino Marche in his honor.

Saint Severinus worked tirelessly to spread the teachings of the Catholic Church and to bring people closer to God. His charisma and leadership qualities had a profound impact on the people of his diocese, resulting in a remarkable resurgence of the faith. Many miracles were attributed to his intercession, and countless conversions and healings were witnessed under his guidance.

Saint Severinus of Septempeda passed away in the year 550 of natural causes. His remains were interred in the cathedral in San Severino Marche, Italy. However, during an incursion by the Goths, his relics were hidden in a side altar of the cathedral for their protection. Later, in 590, the relics were taken to the site of Severinus's hermitage on Monte Nero, where a church was built to enshrine them in 944.

Unfortunately, the relics were lost during an invasion in 1197 but were miraculously rediscovered on May 15, 1576. This date is now celebrated as his feast day in the Roman Martyrology. Saint Severinus of Septempeda was officially canonized as a saint before the formal process of canonization was established.

Saint Severinus is venerated as the patron saint of Camerino-San Severino Marche, Italy, and the diocese of San Severino Marche. Although there is no specific representation assigned to him, he is remembered for his unwavering faith, selflessness, and dedication to the poor and disadvantaged.

The life of Saint Severinus of Septempeda serves as an inspiration to all who strive to live a life of love, compassion, and service to others. Although his relics may have been lost and found over the centuries, his legacy as a faithful shepherd of the Catholic Church remains intact, continuing to inspire believers to this day.
